Tokyo’s daily coronavirus cases drop to 393, total tops 100,000

Written by on February 1, 2021

Tokyo’s reported daily coronavirus cases on Monday dropped to 393, the lowest in more than a month, but its cumulative total has topped 100,000.

The daily figure was down significantly from the 633 infections confirmed Sunday, with the previous lowest figure reported on Dec. 21. Infection numbers tend to be lower on Mondays as fewer hospitals and clinics are open on weekends.

Amid a one-month state of emergency from Jan. 7, the Japanese capital has until recently confirmed more than 1,000 daily cases almost every day.

When the emergency was declared, it reported a record 2,447 cases.

Tokyo saw nearly 40,000 new coronavirus cases in January, more than double the previous monthly record infections in December, according to the metropolitan government.

The central government has suggested that the emergency declaration may be lifted if the daily number of coronavirus cases in Tokyo falls to 500.

But a metropolitan government official said it is too early to be optimistic based on Monday’s figure alone. While the seven-day rolling average of new cases has fallen below 1,000, it remains high at 818. The number of serious cases dropped by seven to 133.

Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga is set to extend the state of emergency covering Tokyo and nine prefectures struggling to contain outbreaks by one month until March 7, with the final decision to be made Tuesday.

In addition to Tokyo, neighboring Kanagawa, Chiba and Saitama prefectures will remain under the state of emergency, as will Aichi, Gifu, Osaka, Kyoto, Hyogo and Fukuoka, an official with knowledge of the situation said Monday.

Tochigi, lying to the north of Tokyo, will be the only prefecture removed because its coronavirus situation has significantly improved, the official said.
