China has, for the first time, two institutions in the top 20 of the world’s leading universities in the latest Times Higher Education rankings released Thursday.
Peking University and Tsinghua University shared 16th place while a record 10 mainland Chinese universities made the top 200 in the 2022 world university rankings.
Among other Asian universities, the University of Tokyo claimed Japan’s highest ever finish in the table at 35th, up one position from last year, since the current ranking system was introduced in 2016. Kyoto University was 61st.
Britain’s University of Oxford retained the top spot for the sixth consecutive year.
A total of 1,662 universities were included this year. The table is based on several performance indicators including teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
