Tokyo confirmed 82 new coronavirus cases Saturday, the lowest daily figure this year, the metropolitan government said.

It is the first time since June 27 of last year that the number of cases in the Japanese capital has come in below 100 on a Saturday.

After hitting a record 5,773 cases on Aug. 13, new infections in Tokyo have declined sharply. Nationwide figures have also been on a steady downward trend after peaking in late August, prompting the government to lift a state of emergency covering the capital and 18 prefectures on Oct. 1.

The seven-day rolling average of new cases in Tokyo stood at 129.1 per day, down 42.9 percent from the previous week, the metropolitan government said.

The number of hospitalized patients fell to 615, down 29 from the previous day. Among them, 68 have severe symptoms, unchanged from the day before.
